Inspiration and Children’s Books

I welcomed 2014 with a grandiose, Hey! Howya Doin’?. Yet, as the days dragged forward, even with my dad’s and two brothers’ birthdays (three days in a row, no less!), the month with its polar vortex and still-dark days…Well, January always stings me as the longest month of any year. Yeah, sure, I should use it to write even more, but WHAT should I write? More importantly, HOW should I write when all I wanna do is cuddle with Mark and M, a big warm afghan and some non-dairy hot cocoa?

Then this scene of Mark and our M inspired me to put my tush in a chair and just write.

Aren’t they “sooooo cute” (as an old episode of The Big Comfy Couch would say)?

The Big Comfy Couch & Inspiration & Children's Books

We recently bought The Big Comfy Couch Best of Seasons 1 & 2 from the bargain bin at a local store. Now it has become one of my daughter’s favorites. I just had to include it here, somehow.

Mark’s sister and her sweet family gave a (once) newborn M a treasure trove of child-friendly books. Little did I know how important each of those tomes would become. The one in the photo of Mark and M is an almost-bent board book of trucks. It  has a little water damage and wear-n-tear. Basically, it is not a “pretty book” anymore, but obviously one of M’s favorites and one she brings to me, Mark or her Grandma anytime she can. She’ll even read the book to her dolls if they’ll sit still and stay in the mood.

Now, I just have to sit still and write, not wait for my mood to “let” me write. As Madeleine L’Engle is known for saying, “Inspiration usually comes during work, rather than before it.”
